Nesta in collaboration with University of Cambridge, aims to show the landscape of new financing models that have emerged outside of the traditional financial system, focusing on online platforms or websites.

The report outlines a market overview, awareness and perceptions of alternative finance, size, growth and trends of different platform models. The report also includes alternative finance current figures, projections, case studies and diagrams from 2012 to 2014.

Key findings:

  • The report highlights that the UK alternative finance market is growing rapidly, and has more than doubled in size year on year from £267 million in 2012 to £666 million in 2013 to £1.74 billion in 2014.
  • The UK alternative finance market provided working, growth and expansion capital to an estimated 7,180 SMEs as well as crucial funding for hundreds of community and voluntary organisations across the UK in 2014.
  • Alternative finance is providing significant additional giving to social good projects, with more than three in four backers of projects with a social focus using funds in addition to what they would normally give to charitable causes.
